Evolution of Email: Where were you?
The Evolution of Email infographic posted on Mashable.com today was actually rather boring, nothing more than a timeline highlighting some of the more notable dates in email’s history.
But, if you are anything like me, skip over the Microsoft advertisement and check out the data. It might be a walk down memory lane.
Where were you in 1965 when email was introduced at MIT?
I don’t remember 1965–I wasn’t even a thought in my parent’s minds at that point. But I do remember signing up for AOL Instant Messenger at my friend’s house after school in the early 90s because we didn’t have internet at home.
Chat rooms, buddies and instant communication seemed so normal, I was addicted. By the time Hotmail came out in 1996, I was more than ready to sign up for my first free email address.
I remember getting my first break-up email sitting at the massive white monitor in my parent’s dining room.
Around 2003 Microsoft Outlook and other programs made it possible to receive mail from multiple accounts. The first move to consolidate what was becoming for many, a tangled web (pun intended).
In the 50s, my grandparents were on the tail end of telegrams, in the 80s, my parents on the cutting edge of email and now in 2011, I just signed up for Facebook messaging. The rate of change in technology is ever increasing and it makes me wonder: What will the next 50 years bring?
